FFXIV free company site

A live, self-hosted website for our FFXIV free company — humour-first, community-built, and full of phased easter eggs.

This FFXIV free company website is live and self-hosted — visit it at fc.alterna.studio. It started as a joke in our little community, but I fairly quickly picked it up and now it is an actual live website.

The site reflects our humour and is a love letter to all of us who spend time playing together and doing silly things in the world of FFXIV. The free company (guild) name is a joke too — many of us play as a race that is short and looks childlike, which led someone to joke we look like a daycare, and that joke stuck.

The website is simple and to the point, hosted on my own hardware, and incorporates a whole mini game with easter eggs that roll out in phases — plus a secret hidden mini game at the end.

Additional info

Highlights

  • A live, self-hosted community site that grew from a one-day joke into a full release.
  • Humour-first design with phased easter eggs and a secret hidden mini game at the end.
  • Astro, custom assets, TypeScript mini-game logic, and test coverage as scope exploded.

The website is built with the Astro framework — a nice coincidence, since I primarily play Astro(logian) in the game. It uses a mix of edited and custom assets, from (poorly) photoshopped pictures to sound files, plus a lot of custom TypeScript to run the easter egg hunt mini game.

The project also uses a solid set of tests to make sure nothing breaks when easter egg behaviour changes. What began as a joke website that could be made in a day quickly grew into something that would take more than a few days to complete — spawning its own set of jokes in our little group.
